Going back to school is always a stressful time for parents and children. Because this school year will be different, the team at Hoskinson Orthodontics wants to help our patients and families in Scotia, NY, get a happy and healthy start to the new year.

Here are some ways you and your family can prepare to go back to school!

Tips for Going Back to School

Whether your children will be returning to school or resuming online learning, sticking to a morning routine will give your family a good start to each day. Start by waking your child up around the same time every morning. For older children and teenagers, encourage them to set their own alarm clocks.

Breakfast is still the most important meal of the day, providing the fuel you and your child need to ward off fatigue, get moving, and stay positive. If your child has braces, here are some healthy, braces-friendly breakfast ideas:

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Smoothies
  • Yogurt
  • Oatmeal
  • Soft fruits (bananas, mangoes, berries, etc.)

Be cautious with crunchy cereals, granola, chewy breads, and hard, sticky fruits like apples, dates, and raisins. After breakfast, make sure your child carefully brushes their teeth and around their braces.

Before heading off to school or beginning the day from home, encourage your child to make their bed, help with morning chores, read, or go outside.

Book Dental & Orthodontist Appointments

Life can get pretty busy when it’s time to go back to school.

With new limitations in place for extracurricular activities, your family may not be as busy as previous school years. We encourage families to still book their dental and orthodontist appointments as far in advance as possible.

If you haven’t booked your family’s dental cleanings or next checkup at the orthodontist, schedule your appointment and learn about what you can expect.

Have a Stocked & Handy Braces Kit

It’s always a good idea to have a braces kit ready to go, no matter if your child is heading off to school or a weekend excursion with the family. Here’s what your child should carry just in case they need to give their braces some extra care and attention outside the house:

  • Travel toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Floss
  • Dental wax
  • Tissues

Healthy, Braces-Friendly Back to School Snacks

There’s nothing like a healthy snack at the end of the day for a much-needed energy boost! Here are some healthy, braces-friendly snacks your children can enjoy when they’ve wrapped up the school day:

  • Soft fruit (grapes, bananas, watermelon, berries, etc.) with yogurt or cottage cheese
  • Avocado, steamed veggies, tomatoes, or cucumber with hummus or salsa
  • Hardboiled egg
  • Sliced apple with peanut butter
  • String cheese
  • Deli meat (sliced thin)
  • Soft granola bars

Your child should avoid hard vegetables and fruit, corn chips, nuts, popcorn, hard pretzels, chewy bread, pizza crust, as well as sticky candy.

Have a Nighttime Routine

Now that it’s time to go back to school, whether that means going in person or online learning, establishing a nighttime routine can help the entire family during the week.

Every family has different rules when it comes to the TV. Encourage your family to partake in more TV-free activities, such as evening walks, playing board games, arts and crafts, or cooking dinner together.

Have a set time when everybody under your roof settles in and gets quiet. Make sure your children lay out their clothes and pack their lunches the night before. Before it’s lights out, don’t forget to brush your teeth!

Fun Ways to Enjoy Time at Home

Having a healthy work/school/life balance is important for the entire family, regardless if you’re all spending more time at home these days. With the closure of many public places and activities, you and your family may be looking for new ways to enjoy the weekends. Here are some safe and enjoyable activities you can try:

  • Family scavenger hunts
  • Board games & puzzles
  • Charades
  • Camping in the woods (or the backyard)
  • Family yoga
  • Hiking or bike riding
  • Chalk drawing
  • Writing letters to family & friends
  • Art or gardening projects
  • Movie & ice cream night (because summer is not the only time of year to enjoy this delicious treat as a family!)
